Hotel Booking India - Pushkar History and Excursions Pushkar HistoryPushkar HistoryPushkar Lake came into being, according to legend, when a lotus petal fell to earth from the hand of Lord Brahma, the God of Creation and highest god of the Indian pantheon. Pushkar established the only Brahma temple in India and this unique distinction has attracted devotees over the ages for a dip in the holy lake and for the main pilgrimage. This takes place during the period preceding and culminating in the full moon night of Karthik Purnima, when thousands congregate. The camel fair coincides with this pilgrimage, where over 200,000 people bring their camels and horses for trading and alongside it a carnival atmosphere lights up with festivities, food and shopping . TemplesThe only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma, the Hindu God of Creation, is here in Pushkar. The temple is marked by a red spire and a swan (Lord Brahma's celestial carrier) carved over the entrance. Atop the hill overlooking the lake is the temple dedicated to Brahma's consort, Savitri. The towering 'gopuram' of the Rangaji Temple decorated with over 360 carved images is remarkable for its south Indian style of architecture. Other important temples are those dedicated to Mahadev, Badri Narayan, Gayatri and Varaha. Pushkar ExcursionsGhatsWhile devotees come all year round to bathe in these holy ghats, thousands together congregate here for a dip at the time of the Karthik Purnima (full moon night in the Hindu calendar month of Karthik) and light their lamps that are set afloat on the lake, a magical moment to behold.
