Khimsar Fort, Khimsar

Khimsar Fort borders the stark and arid Thar Desert. It stands among the sand dunes, a secure bastion as it has been for centuries against enemies. It is an oasis of comfort with its 11 acres of lush lawns under the canopy of bright clear skies by day and brilliant unending stars by night.

The building was started in 1523 by Rao Karamsji, who chose Khimsar as the mid-point, 90 km from Jodhpur where one brother resided and 150 km away from the Bikaner fiefdom of another brother.

Part of Khimar fort has remained the residence of the Karamsot Rathor direct lineage while the rest has been opened as a hotel on a grand and elegant scale with full royal Rajput hospitality. It is personally overseen by the family and it was awarded the 'Grand Heritage Award for Excellence' by the India Tourism Board.
